WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Larry McMurtry and sequel to 1983’s Best Picture Oscar®-winner Terms Of Endearment, The Evening Star is a warm continuation of the much loved saga about the chaotic life that surrounds Aurora Greenway (Shirley MacLaine, reprising her Academy Award®-winning role). Her three troubled grandchildren continuously let her down, her beloved housekeeper (Marion Ross) is contemplating marriage and she begins an unkikely romance with her young, eccentric therapist (Bill Paxton). All the while, Aurora’s strength and experience keeps her failing family together.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits natural color fidelity with accurate fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Images are generally sharp and detailed with excellent contrast and shadow detail. Slight noise and minor artifacts are apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has a lovely and well recorded orchestral score with a wide and deep soundstage presence. Sound effects are produced in stereo, but surround envelopment is subtle. Dialogue always sounds natural with good spatial integration. This is a nicely presented, but softly rendered soundtrack that complements the film.
