WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Miramax is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, starring Anthony Quinn (two-time Academy Award® winner) as Quasimodo, the mysterious huntchback who hides in the bell tower of the Notre Dame Cathedral. When kingsman Phoebus de Chateaupers (Jean Danet) is nearly murdered and his elusive gypsy lover Esmeralda (Gina Lollobrigida), is the suspect, Quasimodo is the only one who can save her from certain death—reciprocating an act of kindness she once showed him. A heartwrenching and powerful tale of desire, passion and dedicated friendship, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is one classic that is sure to please.

LaserDisc Picture:
The CinemaScope® picture, framed at 2.35:1, exhibits dated, but fully saturated colors with deep solid blacks and natural fleshtones. Images are “plugged-up,” wanting in sharpness and detail throughout. Shadow detail is generally good. Slight noise and minor artifacts are apparent throughout which sometimes is distracting.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is undistinguished and compressed monaural that often sounds distorted. Dialogue and effects are out-of-sync with the images.
