WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Withnail & I is the autobiographical cult favorite by Bruce Robinson. “A grimly serious comedy” in late-60s London, the optimistic Marwood (Paul McGann) and his self-absorbed, cynical roommate Withnail (Richard E. Grant) are desperate for a change in their dreary, jobless and substance-filled lives. When Withnail’s eccentric Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) takes a fancy to Marwood and offers them a week at his run-down estate, the two friends set out to the hostile country where their wits—and friendship—are sorely tested. The original theatrical trailer is included with the feature and a brilliant essay about the man who inspired Robinson’s Withnail & I is printed on the LaserDisc jacket.

LaserDisc Picture:
Though a bit dark, this matted 1.85:1 picture exhibits natural fleshtones and color fidelity with deep, grainy blacks. Images are generally sharp and detailed with poor shadow detail. Distracting noise is apparent throughout with minor artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is produced in undistinguished monaural.
