WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Magnificent locations, breathtaking cinematography and Oscar®-nominated art direction bring Heaven’s Gate to life. Retelling the true story of Wyoming’s infamous Johnson County Wars in the 19th Century, wealthy cattlemen, backed by the U.S. Government, hired mercenaries to murder 125 immigrant settlers. Marshall James Averill (Kris Kristopherson) is the only man appalled by the decision and tries to stop the killings.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is rendered from a poor quality anamorphic print and exhibits orangish color fidelity with distorted colors and undefined blacks. Darker scenes are generally too dark. Some scenes are wanting in sharpness and detail, while others are sharp and well defined. Shadow detail is often murky and undefined and noise, grain and artifacts mar the picture throughout. Chapter 11’s barn dance scene displays poor image quality and, in places, the color virtually disappears. The Panavision® Scope theatrical aspect ratio is presented at 2.32:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack varies from fair stereo to undistinguished monaural. Dialogue sounds strident as do sound effects. Bass is wanting throughout. Dolby® Digital encoding adds nothing except more edginess.
