WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on E. M. Forster’s novel, A Room With A View was nominated for eight 1986 Academy Awards®, winning three. This period drama is filled with light humor and romance as the naive, but headstrong Miss Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) becomes engaged to the absurdly proper Cecil Vyse (Daniel Day Lewis in a charming and humorous role), only to learn later that she has truly fallen for the impetuous George.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.76:1, is inconsistent throughout, exhibiting a quality that looks dated. Colors are often undersaturated with a yellow hue and soft blacks. Images are wanting in sharpness and detail, seeming a bit out of focus. Some scenes, on the other hand, are extremely sharp and detailed with fully saturated colors. Even with its mediocre qualities, the picture is beautiful due to its extraordinary costumes and enchanting scenery.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Overall, the Dolby® Surround sound presence is bright and unbalanced for an experience that seems “manufactured.”
