WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on Michael Tolkin’s novel and directed by Robert Altman, The Player is a clever satirical thriller about Griffin Mill (Tim Robbins), a top studio executive and major Hollywood player, who looses control when he receives a series of threatening postcards from a mysterious screenwriter. Paranoia sets in deeply and Griffin hunts down the alleged mystery writer, murders him and quickly falls in love with the dead man’s girlfriend.

LaserDisc Picture:
Definitely improved over the previous Laser Disc release and near identical in clarity to the DVD version reviewed in Issue 25 , the 1.85:1 high definition transfer still exhibits problematic color fidelity. Sometimes oversaturated with reddish fleshtones, the picture exhibits generally sharp and detailed images. Noise and artifacts are minimal throughout.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital discrete soundtrack is really 4.1-channel mix with .1 low frequency effects, but generally sounds mono.
