WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the original story by Koike Kazuo and Kojima Goseki, Lone Wolf And Cub: Sword Of Vengeance is the first installment in a six film series that takes place in mid-eastern Japan during the early Tokugawa Era—a period that lasted over 250 years. Telling the tale of Ogami Itto, a man entrusted by the Shogunate (the military overlords of the Tokugawa Era) with the grave responsibility of official executioner. When Ogami is falsely accused of treason by the evil Yagyu Clan, he is stripped of his position and loses his wife to assassination. Ogami and his infant son embark on a blood-soaked journey of revenge and death. In-depth liner notes, explaining the Lone Wolf And Cub series and its terms, are included.

LaserDisc Picture:
Lots of inconsistencies are apparent in this problematic 2.12:1 film. The opening scene is overly bright and very hazy. Color fidelity can look natural at times, but often exhibits extremely poor contrast and shadow detail. Images are generally wanting in sharpness and detail. Noise and artifacts are apparent throughout. The second line of subtitles cannot be read on widescreen monitors.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is distorted monaural.
