WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based upon the novel “The One Hundred And One Dalmations” by Dodie Smith, 101 Dalmations is the live-action remake of Disney’s animated classic. While strolling in a London park one day, two Dalmations, Pongo and Perdy, conspire to bring their owners together. Before long, Roger (Jeff Daniels) and Anita (Joely Richardson) are married, and Pongo and Perdy become the proud parents of fifteen puppies. Glenn Close stars as Cruella De Vil, a wealthy, fur-loving fashion tycoon whose love of stripes has grown thin. Desperate for a new look, Cruella becomes determined to wear the puppies as a coat. She sends her clumsy cohorts Jasper (Hugh Laurie) and Horace (Mark Williams) to collect every Dalmation pup in London—and Pongo and Perdy must race against the clock to save their pups.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.30:1, exhibits exemplary quality with extraordinary contrast. Colors are vibrant and warm with rich hues, natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Images are always sharp and detailed, exhibiting stunning imagery. There is no noise or artifacts for a gorgeous picture that is sure to please. Don’t miss this exeptional visual treat—especially the barnyard scene, which is simply wonderful.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is outstanding with a terrific orchestral score that is well recorded. Soundstage imaging is excellent and both the Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete and the PCM matrix are very much the same sonic character. Soundstage imaging is wide and deep and surround is often aggressive with moments of discrete surround imaging. Bass extension is deep and powerful with a thunderstorm that is spectaculary presented. The .1 LFE channel delivers a bit more low-end punch. Only sometimes is there no signal in the Dolby Digital surrounds, but otherwise, both renderings are superb and fully complement the wonderful visuals.
