WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Three time Academy Award®-winner On Golden Pond is a rare and valuable tale starring Henry Fonda in his last role at the age of 80. It begins when crotchety old Norman Thayer, Jr. (Fonda) and his devoted wife, Ethel (Katharine Hepburn) arrive at their lakefront Maine cottage—a place just as beautiful as the summers past. Their estranged daughter Chelsea (Jane Fonda) brings her fiancé’s 13 year-old son (Doug McKeon) to stay on “Golden Pond” while she is away on vacation. Thus begins a relationship with Norman and the boy—a relationship that inevitably goes on to mend the distressed connection between Norman and Chelsea.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.75:1 picture exhibits good color fidelity with natural fleshtones, rich and warm colors and deep solid blacks. Some interior scenes seem a bit plugged up, but the exterior lakeside vegetation often looks lush and vivid. Images are often softly focused with slight noise, but no artifacts are apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural with a dated presence.
