WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Volcano is the latest in explosive natural disaster Hollywood blockbusters. Los Angeles, a city which has become almost a byword for disaster, is about to experience its most cataclysmic event ever, when a vent in the Earth’s crust causes a volcanic eruption under the La Brea Tar Pits! An unprepared city faces its worst nightmare as an endless stream of fiery, deadly lava creeps across traffic-choked streets. Mike Roark (Tommy Lee Jones), chief of the emergency services team battling the volcano, joins forces with Dr. Amy Barnes (Anne Heche), the seismologist who knows how absurd it is to try to stop the volcano’s deadly power.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture exhibited on this THX®-quality assured transfer is superb. Colors are vivid with rich and warm hues, accurate fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Images are always sharp and detailed. Both contrast and shadow detail are excellent. There is no noise or artifacts apparent for a pristine picture experience. The visual effects are excitingly rendered, creating a hellish disaster of explosions, lava flow and ash fall. The aspect ratio is matted at 1.82:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is very spatial and thunderous with exciting dynamic swings that make this one of the most breathtaking sonic experiences ever recorded on film. The sound design is superb with creative emphasis on spatial soundfield effects that put you in the film. There are plenty of split surrounds and directional surround effects delivered by the Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete version. Bass extends way below 25Hz with incredible power in the .1 low frequency effects channel. Occasionally, when every channel is loaded with full power, some digital distortion is heard in the surrounds of the Dolby Digital version. The matrix PCM soundtrack sounds slightly veiled when compared to the discrete. The music score is nicely recorded, presenting a wide and deep soundstage throughout.
