WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on true events and the novel by Vassili Vassilikos, Constanin Costa-Gavras’ Academy Award®-winning (Best Foreign Language Film and Editing) Z chronicles the attempted assassination of a liberal candidate (Yves Montand) and its chilling aftermath in an unidentified Balkan nation. Shot in frenetic, documentarian-style, with a superb cast of French actors who breathe life into this shocking and controversial suspense tale, Z remains one of the most intriguing and important films ever. Combining intrigue, drama and wit, the film made its mark as a groundbreaking political roman à clef, and still resonates to this day.

LaserDisc Picture:
The inconsistent 1.66:1 picture exhibits vibrant, sometimes oversaturated and brownish colors, with generally natural fleshtones and deep undefined blacks. Images are often sharp and detailed with mediocre shadow detail. Slight noise and occasional artifacts are apparent. Subtitles are easily legible on widescreen monitors.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural that sounds distorted with extremely shrill and harsh dialogue.
