WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the romance novel by Wiliam Henry Hudson, Green Mansions features Anthony Perkins as Abel, a political fugitive seeking gold in South America to fund his revenge against his father’s assassins. He meets with a group of natives and discovers a forest forbidden by the chief. Believing the tribe is hiding gold, Abel scouts the pristine jungle, but learns the chief’s son was supposedly murdered by an evil spirit known as Rima (Audrey Hepburn), or the “bird girl.” The Indians force Abel to go back into the forest with a mission to kill the innocent Rima, but when the two meet, they are drawn to one another and forced to run for their lives from the savage tribe.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.32:1 looks dated with generally good color fidelity, natural fleshtones and deep blacks. Images are generally sharp and detailed, but scenes in the forbidden forest with Audrey Hepburn are much softer in focus. Contrast and shadow detail is mediocre. Slight noise and excessive artifacts are apparent throughout.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is stereo and has matrix encoding errors which can be heard in dialogue leakage. Subtle surround envelopment is provided by the sweeping music score, but the fidelity on this soundtrack is dated.
