WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the Edward Anderson novel, Thieves Like Us is a sensitive and poignant look at Bowie (Keith Carradine), Chicamaw (John Schuck) and T-Dub (Bert Remsen), three prison camp escapees who embark on a series of violent bank robberies during the 1930s Depression. In the midst of their successful crime spree, Bowie falls for the simple, uneducated Keechie (Shelley Duvall) and the trio seek shelter at T-Dub’s relative Mattie (Louise Fletcher), but when the law closes in on them, these small-time criminals find there is nowhere to run.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.82:1, looks dated and is marred with noise and artifacts throughout. Images are extremely soft, hazy and wanting in sharpness and detail. There is a slight dark character throughout. Colors appear to be fairly natural, though slightly brownish. Contrast is extremely poor with mediocre shadow detail. Overall, the soft character and contrast distract from the presentation.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is compressed and distorted monaural.
