WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on “The Legend Of The Zu Mountain Warriors”—a 50 volume opus (not counting the 9 volume prologue and 5 volume epilogue)—Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain retains the story of a young warrior’s search for the Twin Swords in the hopes of saving the mortal world from the Forces Of Evil. This film marked the turning point for Hong Kong cinema when director Tsui Hark enlisted the help of renowned American special effects wizards to teach him how to do special camera effects.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, is overly bright with extremely poor contrast and shadow detail. Images are wanting in sharpness and detail, often appearing out of focus and hazy. Colors are unnatural, but vibrant and are often completely undefined. Distracting artifacts mar the picture throughout and noise is also apparent. The second line of subtitles cannot be read on widescreen monitors.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural that sounds distorted.
