WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
In & Out is a hilarious comedy about Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline), a small town high school teacher planning his wedding to fellow teacher, Emily (Joan Cusack). Howard is glued to the TV on the night of the Academy Awards® to watch his former student Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon) receive an Oscar® for playing a gay soldier. In his acceptance speech, Drake announces to an audience of millions that Howard is gay! Poor Howard is so deeply hidden in the closet, he’s outted when he didn’t even know he was in!

DVD To LaserDisc Comparison:
Both the anamorphic DVD and LaserDisc pictures exhibit very natural looking color fidelity throughout with accurately rendered fleshtones, richly hued colors and deep, solid blacks. The DVD color resolution is superb in revealing subtle textures and better detail. Both DVD and LaserDisc images are sharp and detailed with nicely rendered textures, though some scenes are slightly soft in appearance. Contrast and shadow detail are excellent with naturally rendered lighting and interiors. The letterbox and anamorphic DVD aspect ratios, as well as the LaserDisc, are matted at 1.82:1 Both the Dolby® Digital discrete 5.1 and matrix PCM Dolby Surround soundtracks have an expansive, nicely recorded orchestral music score with excellent soundstage imaging and dynamics. Dialogue sounds natural and spatially integrated though there are outdoor scenes in which the dialogue is obviously ADR-produced. Surround envelopment is effectively subtle, but aggressive at times during music accompaniment. The matrix PCM version recreates a more spatial dimension on a consistent basis while the Dolby Digital often is inaudible in the surrounds. This is a satisfying experience that while credited as a 5.1 soundtrack is really a 5.0 presentation with no .1 LFE.
