WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Elvis Presley surfs, sings and swings his way through 1961’s Blue Hawaii. Upon returning to his home on Oahu from a two-year stint in the Army, Chad Gates (Elvis Presley) is expected to go to work for his father. But Chad‘s idea of work is paddling his surfboard past the breakwater. Over his mother’s (Angela Lansbury) Southern drawled objections, he becomes a tour guide—to the delight of the teenage girl tourists and to the dismay of his girlfriend Maile (Nancy Walters). The scenery is lush and beautiful and the music is... well, it’s Elvis! Dust off that ukulele and sing along to “Rock-A-Hula-Baby,” “Can’t Help Falling In Love” and of course, “Blue Hawaii.” Aloha!

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.32:1, looks slightly dated and plugged-up, even in exterior scenes, but the vibrant color fidelity is quite appealing. Fleshtones, though a little brownish (especially in interiors), are generally natural; colors are rich and vivid with deep solid blacks. Images are sharp, but often wanting in detail and definition. Interior scenes often are soft and hazy in appearance, and darker scenes are wanting in better contrast and shadow delineation.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural that sounds distorted.
