WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
A classic 1950s musical, Kiss Me Kate features Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel as a once-married and still battling couple scheduled to appear together in a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. To complicate matters, Ann Miller, Keel’s saucy new love interest has a part in the play as well. Because the movie was filmed in 3-D, there are many scenes where items are thrown directly toward the camera. Without the 3-D, the action amusingly occurs for no apparent reason.

LaserDisc Picture:
Colors are sometimes nicely rendered in this classic musical film which has been newly remastered. Fleshtones are generally natural, with rich color fidelity and deep, solid blacks. Images are generally sharp, but wanting in fine detail and definition with slightly soft edges. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered. The picture is solid, with no distracting noise or artifacts. The LaserDisc is matted at 1.75:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Gosh, this is a great soundtrack considering this film musical was released in 1953. The fidelity is rich and full sounding and spatial dimension is very good. The music wraps nicely into the surround channel. Dialogue is completely natural with good spatial integration. If you love musicals, you will love this unforgettable treat.
