WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the story “The Sobbin’ Women” by Stephen Vincent Benet, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers takes us to the Oregon Territory of the 1850s where men were men and women were scarce. Backwoodsman Adam Pontipee (Keel) decides he needs to take a wife to help out with the chores, so he convinces Millie (Powell), the most capable girl in town, to marry him.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is dated throughout, but the 2.55:1 LaserDisc is quite soft. Colors are generally natural, with accurate fleshtones, rich and warm colors and deep pure blacks, though appearing slightly smeared. There is minor noise apparent. The alternate version on the separate disc measures 1.85:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The original 4-track magnetic soundtrack has been remastered on this discete 5.1 Dolby® Digital presentation. The PCM audio is the same soundtrack with matrix encoding and, while retaining directionalized dialogue, sounds more pulled toward center than the discrete version. The sound has been repositioned aggressively to the surrounds and foot-tapping .1 LFE has been added for greater bass impact. Dialogue is produced on sets and sounds somewhat manufactured, and of course, as soon as the musical numbers kick in, the sonic character changes dramatically to a music.
