WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Winner of seven Academy Awards®, Shakespeare In Love stars Best Actress®-winner Gwyneth Paltrow as the beautiful Lady Viola who assists William Shakespeare (Fiennes) with a bad case of writer’s block by having a lively affair with the good old Bard! But there’s trouble afoot for Viola and Will for she hides a secret or two that could spell trouble for the comically ill-fated couple.

LaserDisc Picture:
The LaserDisc picture is absolutely pleasing in all aspects with sharp and detailed images. Contrast and shadow delineation are perfectly delineated. Colors are naturally balanced with accurate fleshtones, rich hues and deep blacks. There are no artifacts on this 2.40:1 LaserDisc, but the picture is is affected by slight noise throughout.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel discrete soundtrack and matrix Dolby Surround audio are very well produced. The discrete version projects an expansive soundfield, which is slightly defined better than the matrix, due to superior channel separation. Dialogue is well-recorded, with natural sounding voices, and good spatial integration. The distribution of sound effects within the listening space is selective, and always effective in depicting a holosonic environment. Though not much is expected in the low-end, some .1 LFE is present. But the prime selling point for this soundtrack is the music score by Stephen Warbeck, which has excellent fidelity and dimensional spread.
