WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Thin Red Line, based on the novel by James Jones marks the return of Terence Malick to the director’s chair after a 20 year absence. Nominated for seven Academy Awards®, the movie, featuring an all-star cast, focuses not so much on explosive war adventures, but more on what goes through the minds of the young men who must live through the chaos that surrounds them on the Pacific Island of Guadalcanal.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 2.35:1 picture is nicely rendered throughout. The occasionally contrasted images are harsh, and effectively portray the stark situations of war, while other scenes are brighter. Shadow delineation is nicely rendered. Noise is sometimes distracting, while overall, the picture will surely please.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack was nominated for an Oscar® but the Dolby® Digital discrete 5.1 version is problematic with at times distorted deep bass extension at unnatural levels. Caution is advised when playing these scenes at full scale SPL. While holosonic imaging is engaging on both soundtracks, the discrete delivers split surround directionality and engaging center back phantom imaging.
