WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Lawman is an intriguing western about the stoic Marshal Jared Maddox (Burt Lancaster), who rounds up a bunch of drunken rowdy cowboys who accidentally killed an old man from his jurisdiction. Against the advice of those in his town, Maddox takes the cowboys to the unwelcoming town of Sabbath to bring them to trial. Their boss (Lee J. Cobb) instructs his men to follow Maddox, leaving their fate up to the town’s timid Marshal Cotton Ryan (Robert Ryan) and its “law-abiding” citizens. To make matters worse, the lovely Laura Shelby (Sheree North) re-enters his life to persuade Maddox to release her new lover, Hurd Price (J.D. Cannon)—one of the cowboys charged with murder.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1 looks western, but is wanting in sharpness and detail. Color fidelity is generally good with natural fleshtones and deep undefined blacks. Shadow detail is generally good, as is contrast. Noise is minimal, except for the darker scenes and major, sometimes distracting artifacts are apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural that is extremely distorted and compressed throughout.
