WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Soul Food is an embracing family drama that tells the story of a tight-knit, but often embattled family, whose center strength is Big Mama Joe (Irma P. Hall). Mama Joe certainly has her hands full because her three daughters—Teri (Vanessa L. Williams), Maxine (Vivica A. Fox) and Bird (Nia Long)—don’t exactly get along. When Mama Joe takes ill, the family ties, always on the verge of unraveling, seem to be coming apart for good.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, is nicely rendered with fully saturated colors, natural fleshtones and deep blacks. Images are sharp and detailed with excellent clarity, shadow detail and contrast. Sometimes interior scenes look a bit plugged up, but there are no artifacts for a presentation that is sure to please.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack sounds bright and thin when compared to the naturally full and bass-rich PCM version. The discrete soundfield collapses, but the matrix delivers effective, sometimes aggressive, envelopment. The music score is terrific. Dialogue always sounds natural and spatially integrated. Both soundtracks are great, but the matrix is preferred.
