WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Turn-of-the-century Paris is in for a surprise when young Gigi (Caron) is transformed from an enthusiastic tomboy to an elegant courtesan. Based on the novel by Collette, this delightful musical combines a memorable Lerner and Loewe collaboration with magnificent costumes, locations and a wonderful cast. Maurice Chevalier won an honorary Oscar® for his career achievement. Ooh La La!

LaserDisc Picture:
The CinemaScope® picture, framed at 2.30:1, exhibits excellent color fidelity. Images are nicely presented, though sometimes wanting in clarity. The sets are beautifully created with rich reds, mauves and golds. Contrast and shadow detail are generally good, but color is what makes this visual presentation a treat. Artifacts are apparent, but noise is usually minor.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The new Dolby® Digital soundtrack seems to have been sourced from a three track master, as there is no surround signal present. The matrix sounds superior to the thin and hiss-infected discrete presentation, delivering both subtle and aggressive surround. Most disturbing on both versions is the unnatural and directional dialogue that sounds to have been altered in an effort to pull the dialogue toward the center
