WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Hoodlum is a riveting crime thriller inspired by Harlem in the 1930s and the life of Bumpy Johnson (Laurence Fishburne). When savage gangster Dutch Schultz (Tim Roth) invades Harlem, Bumpy Johnson soon learns that the only way to protect his territory is to play Dutch’s deadly game—and involve mob chieftain Lucky Luciano (Andy Garcia).

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 picture exhibits natural color fidelity and fleshtones on sets that effectively create the look of the times. Images are generally sharp and detailed, but are marred with noise and occasional artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 soundtrack delivers effective discrete surround envelopment that is both aggressive and subtle, but sometimes the PCM matrix has a more spatial surround presence. The music score is well recorded with a wide and deep soundstage presence. Dialogue is nicely spatial, though ADR is evident at times. Deep bass is occasionally delivered in the .1 low frequecy effects channel for a slightly deeper and more powerful presence in the discrete.
