WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Told from the perspective of a young Beijing boy, this drama tells astory of hope and freedom during China’s anti-rightist campaign. The story traces the lives of an ordinary family and their neighbors caught in a prolonged period of political and social upheaval. The film is banned in China, where the director is forbidden to make films.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.78:1 picture is rich, with vivid colors, natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Natural and realistic is descriptive of the picture. Shadow delineation is excellent, as is color fidelity and contrast. Images are rendered slightly soft. The source element appears to be a pristine print, with some slight noise and minor artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is undistinguished mono.
