WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Top Gun is a fast-paced, highly entertaining ride in the wild blue skies with a group of ace jet pilots taught at the Navy’s prestigious Fighter Weapons School. Tom Cruise stars as Maverick Mitchell, a daring pilot whose ambition is to become the best of the best—the Top Gun. When Maverick lets the rules slide, he learns that he can’t always succeed with split-second decisions when he’s flying against the best pilots in the world.

LaserDisc Picture:
The THX® digitally mastered picture, supervised by Tony Scott, varies in sharpness and is marred b y variable element quality. Grain and noise are prevalent in the scenes with flying jets and this is somewhat of a distraction. Interior scenes are generally sharp and detailed with minimal noise. Fleshtones are always natural, and blacks are deep and solid with good shadow detail. The film’s original framing has been altered to a 1.95:1 aspect ratio.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
A new Dolby® Digital AC-3® encoded surround soundtrack was made from the original 70mm six-track printmaster, which delivers a full throttle SPL and dynamic range experience. Both matrix and discrete 5.1-channel versions excel in below 25Hz bass extension and power, and spatial envelopment, but the discrete has the edge with directional effects in the surrounds. However, the music is more subdued on the discrete version.
