Marlee Matlin won a well deserved Best Actress Oscar® for her role as Sarah, a headstrong hearing impaired young woman who graduated from a small New England school for the deaf and chose to remain in the safety of this silent world. Distant at first, she soon learns to trust James Leeds (Hurt), an unconventional new teacher and wins his heart.
