WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the television series created by Bruce Geller, Mission: Impossible is an explosive edge-of-your-seat spy spectacular. Tom Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, an over-eager IMF agent whose team is assigned by their chief Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) to retrieve the Noc List —a list of every name of top undercover agents from around the world. When their mission is ambushed, Hunt’s persistence leaves him the sole survivor (so he thinks), and framed for the deaths of his espionage team. To recover the list, Hunt stays one step ahead of government assassins, pulling together his own group of secret agents to find out who sabotaged the team. With the help of Phelps’ wife Claire (Emmanuelle Beart), and an ingenious computer hacker (Ving Rhames), Hunt fantastically pulls off the impossible—breaking in to a highly protected computer vault in the Pentagon with the grace of a trapeze artist. Filled with not-who-they-seem characters, explosive action and cutting-edge techno-thrills, Mission: Impossible is a high-speed suspense sensation.

LaserDisc Picture:
Director Brian De Palma widescreen 2.35:1 picture frame exhibits all sorts of incredibly imaginative visuals and effective camera angles for a visually stunning presentation. The THX®-quality assured transfer exhibits excellent color fidelity with rich and warm colors, natural fleshtones, deep solid blacks and superb contrast. Shadow detail is outstanding and images are very sharp and detailed. There is no apparent noise or artifacts for an exemplary picture rendering.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is incredibly exciting and dynamic on both the linear PCM matrix and Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete versions. Danny Elfman’s magnificent score features elements of the memorable Mission: Impossible theme composed by Lalo Schifrin. The sound is beautifully recorded with excellent soundstage imaging. Bass extension is especially deep and powerful on the .1 track and dialogue, while ADR-produced, is nicely integrated spatially. The discrete version is preferred as sound effects are often presented in split surround for an enhanced dimensional soundfield experience that realizes the soundtrack’s full impact.
