WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Smokey And The Bandit stars Burt Reynolds as the Bandit, a bootlegger who becomes a trucker-hero of the South when he puts the pedal to the metal to outwit and out-drive the law. His motivation for the zany chase is to keep a daffy runaway bride (Sally Field) from the irate sheriff “Smokey,” or Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason)—a hot tempered redneck lawman who ain’t gonna rest ‘til he puts the Bandit in jail. As the chase escalates, so does the number of cop cars involved in this free-wheelin’, tire-squealin’, car flippin’ Trans Am action classic. It’s a high-powered joy ride all the way.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 picture is natural in color fidelity with accurate fleshtones and vivid colors, although wanting in sharpness and detail. Often the outdoor scenes are hazy and unfocused. The slightest noise is apparent but no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished mono that sounds completely “manufactured.”
