WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Professor Daniel Jackson (Spader) is a science expert on a secret mission to decode an Egyptian artifact known as the Stargate. When he deciphers the code, its power is revealed as a mysterious passageway to the unknown. Mission leader, Colonel Jack O’Neil (Russell) commandeers a trip through the Stargate to an civilization on the other side of the universe, similar to that of ancient Egypt.

LaserDisc Picture:
This 2.35:1 Panavision® transfer (not 1.85:1, mistakingly credited on the jacket) has improved color fidelity, less grain and less image enhancement artifacts than the previous THX®-quality assured edition.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Both the matrix PCM and discrete 5.1 Dolby® Digital soundtracks are superb. (There is no Multi-Audio programming, as credited on the jacket.) The soundtrack is still one of the best discrete mixes ever produced. The below 25Hz .1 low frequency effects track is powerful and provides the perfect foundation to the spectacular scenes. Dialogue is natural with excellent spatial integration and David Arnold’s wonderfully sweeping score is expansive and dynamic. Sound effects are produced in stereo and the surround presence is aggressive. While both versions are excellent, the discrete soundtrack is preferred for the improved delineation of the soundfield due to the independent surrounds. This is a strenuous exercise for your home theatre system to deliver all the excitement.
