WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
From John Grisham’s novel comes a powerfully charged drama with an outstanding cast that tells the heartbreaking story of an African American father (Jackson) who seeks revenge on the rednecks who brutally raped his 10 year-old daughter. A white small-town lawyer (McConaughey) takes the case, not realizing he will soon be battling the malicious DA (Spacey), the Ku Klux Klan, the NAACP and putting the lives of his family and friends in danger.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is framed at the SMPTE standard anamorphic scope 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Picture quality is exemplary with rich and warm colors, natural fleshtones and deep solid blacks. Shadow detail and contrast are excellent as well and images are very sharp and detailed. Slight noise is apparent in the darker scent but there are no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtracks in both the PCM matrix and Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete formats are superb. Dialogue sounds natural with excellent spatial integration for the most part, except for some ADR-produced scenes in which dialogue does not achieve perfect integration. The ambiance soundfield delineation in the jail an court room scenes is effectively produced to create a wonderful subtle surround presence. Unfortunately, in the courtroom and other interior scenes the discrete version has no signal in the surrounds and the matrix version is preferred. But the discrete version has a slightly wider soundstage and better defined directional sound effects and dimensional space when the soundfield is fully activated. The music score has a sweepingly wide perspective with excellent depth and imaging and bass response is deep and powerful with the .1 channel effectively used.
