WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Casper is a kids (and adults) fest of action animated adventure. Based on the original Harvey comic characters, the movie captures the spirit of Casper, “the friendly ghost” with a 90’s twist in dazzling special effects. Dr. James Harvey (Pullman), a trained ghost therapist, and his daughter Kat (Ricci) have been hired to exorcise Whipstaff Manor. The greedy owners of the house benefit in its cleansing due to some hidden treasure. When the two move in what they find in the old house is a friendly but lonely young ghost named Casper, who’s really just looking for a friend. While Casper befriends Kat; Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso (The Ghostly Trio), become annoyed as it’s against house rules to allow “fleshies” inside.

LaserDisc Picture:
This exemplary matted 1.85:1 picture is the same eye-popping transfer as the original release. Images are sharp and detailed and solid throughout with only the slightest noise found in the darkest of scenes. Color fidelity is excellent with natural fleshtones and vibrant colors.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The DTS Digital Surround soundtrack is outstandingly extraordinary. This is one of the best 5.1 discrete sound designs you will ever have experienced. The sound is stunning with exceptionally well defined directional and spot effects, and delicate inner detail resolution. The 5.1 soundfield is exceptionally well balanced and coherent throughout. Deep bass extension and definition is exemplary. And the interior spatial mapping of Whipstaff Manor is spectacular in that the various interior volumes are well delineated using spatial effects. DTS Digital Surround resolves every nuance and ambiant reverbant sound precisely, even phantom images along the back and side walls. The music score also is more defined with better depth and soundstage imaging. And the separation and subtle detail in the Foley effects is the best I have heard. This is a remarkable achievement in sound.
