WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Madigan is based on the novel “The Commissioner” by Richard Dougherty. When Detective Dan Madigan (Widmark) and his partner lose a potentially dangerous suspect, their superior officer, Commissioner Anthony Russell (Fonda), a veteran cop who lives by, and for, the book, gives them 72 hours to find him. Madigan, obsessed with the manhunt, neglects everything—including his wife—in hopes of finding the hit man. When gunfire breaks out at a police raid on the Manhattan tenement where the suspect is hiding, not all will survive. Screenplay writer Henri Simoun is actually blacklisted writer Howard Rodman.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is framed in the Techniscope® 2.35:1 aspect ratio, but the resolution is very poor. Noise is apparent throughout as well as are artifacts, and the images appear plugged-up, lacking in sharpness and detail. Colors are dated and the picture is dark overall with deep blacks, but poor shadow detail.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is compressed monaural suited to a limited television experience.
