Samsung To Underwrite Majority Of CBS Television Movies In HDTV

CBS Corporation and Samsung Electronics America, Inc. have announced that they had entered into an agreement in which Samsung will underwrite the costs associated with converting the majority of the CBS Televisionís movies to high definition television, including presentations of the ""CBS Sunday Movie"" and the ""CBS Wednesday Movie."" The converted programming, which will be broadcast beginning this fall and run throughout the 1999/2000-television season, will be presented in the 1080i format. Samsungís underwriting commitment will be supported with advertising across several appropriate CBS media platforms. ""Through series programming, sports and now movies, CBS has established a clear leadership position in the transition to digital broadcasting,"" said Martin D. Eighteen of CBSís owned and affiliated stations are currently broadcasting in digital, covering approximately 38 percent of the nation. By November 1, CBS expects to be transmitting digital programming across approximately 35 owned and affiliated stations, reaching more than 50 percent of the country. Since its first HDTV broadcast in October 1998, CBS has featured a wide selection of digital programming in sports, news and entertainment. Most recently, the Company announced plans to broadcast digitally the majority of its primetime series lineup, beginning this fall and running throughout the 1999/2000-television season.
