DVD Storage Could Be Extended With New Method

A research firm last week claimed it had demonstrated technology to extend DVD and CD-ROM concepts to multiple-disk systems. C3D Inc.'s fluorescent multilayer technology stacks transparent disks to fit more storage into a smaller space, albeit in read-only format thus far. ""Instead of having a reflected light from a metallized surface, we use fluorescent irradiation,"" said Eugene Levich, C3D's Chief Executive. The trick lies in making the disks transparent and- in the case of memory cards-in technology that allows C3D to distinguish between layers that are mere microns apart, he said. Actual products are at least 12 months away, Levich said, but ultimately the company hopes to produce 5-Gbyte memory cards for less than $2, or ROM disk drives exceeding 100 Gbytes for less than $50.
