DTS (Digital Theater Systems) recently announced it has successfully introduced DTS technology to the Chinese film market. After more than two years of business development with the Chinese film industry and government officials, films produced in DTS Digital Sound have been released in this market to much acclaim. ""The Chinese film industry has a rich tradition of storytelling that can be enhanced by high-quality and reliable DTS playback, and China represents one of the largest growth opportunities in the world today,"" said Andrea Nee, Vice President/General Manager, DTS Cinema Group. ""This advance marks a significant addition to our global business, as our technology is now available in 84 countries worldwide."" On a recent trip to China, Jon Kirchner, DTS Executive Vice President, and Ms. Nee, oversaw the installation of DTS studio mixing equipment at Shanghai Film & Television Group, one of China's major motion picture studios, making it a full service provider of DTS technology with the capability of encoding films in DTS. DTS will also be providing playback equipment to the Chinese exhibition industry. At a ""ceremony"" held at a movie theater in Shanghai, officials from Shanghai Paradise Group and Shanghai Film & Television Group ran a demonstration of DTS technology and formally welcomed DTS into the Chinese marketplace. The event was well attended by government officials and leading studio and exhibition professionals. Last September, representatives of the Chinese Film Bureau came to visit DTS headquarters to learn more about the company's technology and operations. Visiting were Mr. Bao Linyue, Deputy Director General and Engineer-In-Chief of the Bureau's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television; Mr. Li Shuping, division director and engineer of China Film Sciences & Technology Research Institute; and Ms. Wang Ting, liaison officer and interpreter, Film Bureau. DTS was launched in 1993 with the release of Universal Pictures' and Amblin Entertainment's ""Jurassic Park,"" and has since remained an innovative leader in feature film digital audio with over 18,000 installations worldwide. This year, DTS has introduced the DTS-6AD Cinema Processor to provide superior quality digital and analog sound playback, and the DTS-ES Extended Surround Decoder to provide the latest innovation in surround sound formats and effects. DTS Consumer Products, Inc. (a subsidiary of DTS, Inc.) is now licensing its technology to hardware and software manufacturers to create Digital Surround products for the home, car, and personal computer, all changing the way consumers listen to music recordings and movie soundtracks on compact discs, LaserDiscs, and DVD video discs.
