Toll, Greenberg, Roe Win Top ASC Honors

John Toll won the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Outstanding Achievement Award Sunday night February 21 for his graphically visual rendition of The Thin Red Line. The award was presented to him by actress Lynn Redgrave in front of 1,500 people gathered at the Century Plaza Hotel to celebrate the 13th Annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards. The annual award for Outstanding Achievement has nearly always been a preview of the Academy AwardÆ winner for Best Cinematography. The last time Widescreen Review covered John Toll winning an ASC Outstanding Achievement Award for his cinema photography work in Braveheart. He won the 1995 OscarÆ for Best Cinematography. Top honors were also given in two television categories. Robbie Greenberg, ASC, won the Outstanding Achievement Award for Movie of the Week/Miniseries for Winchell, a telefilm which aired on HBO. Bill Roe won the Outstanding Achievement Award for ""Drive,"" an episode of The X-Files which aired on the Fox Network (in a widescreen format Thursday, February 18). Director Martha Coolidge presented the award to Greenberg and actress Leslie Silva to Roe. Itís Tollís third nomination and second win in the ASC competition. He won in 1995 for Braveheart and was previously nominated for Legends of the Fall in 1994. It was the first nomination and win in the ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards competition for both Greenberg and Roe. ASC was founded in 1919 for the main purposes of advancing the art of narrative filmmaking, and to provide a forum where cinematographers can share experiences and ideas.
