Weekly DVD Sales Break One Million Mark

DVD pundits now have more than 1 million reasons to tip a few glasses of the bubbly on New Year's Eve. While most of the planet will be celebrating 2000, DVD retailers and suppliers will be congratulating themselves on a much more profitable figure: For the first time in its short history, DVD weekly sales compiled through the VideoScan data tracking service reached the 1 million unit mark, specifically, 1,274,497 units, during the one-week holiday shopping period that ended December 19. The week before was the format's previous zenith with 955,351 units. The all-time top DVD sales title, ""The Matrix,"" once again topped the home entertainment charts this week. The thriller remains the leading DVD seller this year. The week's only new VHS and DVD release, ""The General's Daughter,"" hit the ground running and came in at No. 1 on both rental charts, according to the VidTrac data tracking service. ""The Matrix,"" ""The Mummy,"" ""Saving Private Ryan"" and ""Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me"" are the top DVD sellers of all time, and all were released in 1999.
