DTS Releases New Demo Disc #4

DTSí Demo DVD #4 will debut at CES 2000, January 6-9, but will not be made available to the public for sale or free distribution. Demo DVD #4 introduces the newest DTS Logo trailer, Sonic Landscape, which features the inside of a piano. Also included are movie clips from ""Dances With Wolves,"" ""The Haunting,"" ""Antz,"" and ""Saving Private Ryan,"" along with clips of the Eagles performing Hotel California from their ""Hell Freezes Over"" DVD, Sheryl Crow's Am I Getting Through from her ""Rockin The Globe Live"" DVD, and Roy Orbison doing his signature classic Pretty Woman from ""Black And White Night."" All the tracks on this Demo DVD, including ""Saving Private Ryan"", are mastered at DTS' full 1536 kilobits per second (kb/s) data rate. The DTS DVD release of ""Saving Private Ryan"" was produced at the 768 kb/s data rate. The sonic differences are extremely subtle, if not imperceptible. At the 768 kb/s data rate, DTS has achieved near the resolution of the higher bit rate and there should be no doubt that 768 kb/s is amazingly good at half the 1536 kb/s data rate first introduced by DTS. Still, as is the case presented for Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio, greater resolution is possible at higher data rates, and when possible DVD releases should embrace the higher DTS data rate. On this disc, the soundtrack for ""The Haunting"" is Dolby Digital Surround EXô encoded, as is the case on the printmaster. The center back matrixed signal on the left and right surround channels can be decoded by several devices including Lexiconís MC-1 THX Surround EXô processor, Smart Devices Center Surround 3Xô adapter, ADA 6.1 adapter and the upcoming consumer version of DTS ES (Extended Surround), which will debut in Yamaha product.
