Princeton Announces Multi-Line Rate Progressive DVD Player Pricing And Shipping Dates

DVD/CD Provides 480p, 720p or 960p Use-Selectable Output Options

Princeton Graphic Systems, manufacturer of multiple award-winning HDTV monitors, computer and convergence displays, announced shipping and pricing for the PVD-5000 Progressive DVD/CD Player. The new player delivers HDTV-quality, progressive digitally scaled images that create the highest level of DVD playback for home theater applications. The player provides viewers an unprecedented degree of control over picture quality from viewer-selectable resolutions of native 480p, upconverted 720p or 960p and variable frame rates of up to 120 per second. Higher frame rates produce significantly less judder and produce images vastly superior to standard progressive DVD players with a fixed 60Hz frame rate. The PVD-5000 is ideally suited for use with multi-scan front projectors and direct-view HD monitors. The overall experience is a balanced synergy of high-end audio performance and unprecedented picture integrity that creates a resounding theater-like experience. The PVD-5000ís suggested list price has been set at $5,499.00 with first shipments scheduled for the second quarter of the year 2000. ""With the PVD-5000 Progressive DVD Player, Princeton provides HDTV-quality output, available now to consumers from standard DVD format content, to take full advantage of their investments in big screen projectors and monitors,"" said William Wang, President and Chief Executive Officer of Princeton Graphics. The PVD-5000 displays a full progressive non-interlaced video signal. Current DVD 480i (interlaced) playback is based upon the NTSC TV system devised in the 1930ís. It ""paints"" the lines of a frame in two separate passes. Half of the lines are drawn in the first pass (the even lines) and the other half (the odd lines) are drawn in the second pass. Progressive scanning paints all of the lines of a frame in one pass from top to bottom and transmits full 525 horizontal lines (480 of which are displayed) in the same amount of time. With double to quadruple the number of lines, the PVD-5000 offers a much higher picture resolution and eliminates motion artifacts. None of the interlaced side effects, such as flickering, are present with progressive scanning. And as image display size increases, so does the appearance of these anomalies. The PVD-5000 utilizes true color reproduction and is artifact-free with a full 10-bit process to provide viewers with HDTV-quality pictures. The PVD-5000 is compatible with DVD discs transferred in 480i (NTSC) and 480p, single or dual-layer discs in single or double-sided formats and features user selectable output of 480p, 720p or 960p vertical resolution and 720, or oversampled 1440 or 2160 horizontal resolution. Viewers can select frame speeds at 60, 72, 96 or 120 Hz for film sources. PVD-5000 also features an auto-detect and auto-switch film/video mode. The PVD-5000 has double buffered precision video outputs on true 75-ohm BNC connectors. Output is selectable between YPbPr, RGBHV and RGB with composite sync formats. Careful attention to impedance design detail and the use of true 75-ohm BNC connectors assures a minimum of impedance mismatch anomalies resulting in signal degradation, reduced picture quality and poor VSWR. A 15-pin HD VGA output is also provided for the RGBHV output. Complementing the playerís video performance, audio features include CD compatibility and the ability to play 24bit/96 kHz Digital Audio Discs (DADs) from both analog and digital outputs. Audio outputs include left and right analog on balanced AES/EBU (XLR) or single-ended via RCA connectors. Digital bitstream for external audio processors is provided via balanced AES/EBU (XLR) or coaxial S/PDIF via BNC, RCA or optical connectors. The PVD-5000 will pass PCM, DolbyÆ Digital (AC-3Æ) and DTSÆ source material. Dual 24-bit, 96 kHz DACs (digital analog converters) provide audiophile-grade performance. The PVD-5000 also features an easy to use on-screen display, a 240 x 64 dot matrix LCD backlit front panel display and an IR remote control. For operation with an external system controller, an RS-232C serial communications port is provided About Princeton Graphic Systems Princeton Graphic SystemsÆ, headquartered in Santa Ana, California, is a leading manufacturer of the All Formatô and high performance computer and convergence displays known for their high quality, reliability and overall customer satisfaction.
