In 1998, Widescreen ReviewÆ, ""The Essential Home Theatre Resourceô,"" conducted its first extensive survey of its magazine readership. The 1998 study, which was regarded as the home theatre industryís most extensive readersí poll, was in actuality, a study of home theatre enthusiasts as much as it was a study of the magazineís readership. The results were distributed to those in the home theatre industry and published in Issue 30 for all to see. Those who read the results discovered many surprising things regarding home theatre and optical disc trends. At the time of the survey, DVD was in its infancy and LaserDisc owners were facing an unsure future. Among other items calling out for attention were Divx, HDTV, and the competition between DolbyÆ Digital 5.1 and DTSÆ Digital Surround Sound.Once again, in 1999, a random sampling of subscribers to the Widescreen Review magazine received the new 1999 Widescreen Review Readersí Poll with Issue 32 (May/June). Since 1998, there have been many changes in home theatre, and this complex 133-question survey sheds light on what directions consumers are headed. The response in 1998 was an incredible 26 percent completed survey returns out of the total 6,000. Hoping to boost response even higher, Widescreen Review asked major home theatre equipment and DVD software manufacturers to contribute prizes for a sweepstakes drawing. Of the 7,600 random subscribers, a whopping 34 percent returned their completed questionnaires. The timely results should prove to be extremely valuable.Gary Reber, Widescreen Reviewís magazine and Webzine Editor and Publisher says, ""This is without a doubt the most extensive and in-depth survey of home theatre and DVD trends ever mounted.
