The stage was set Wednesday for a turbocharged race for the best visual effects Oscar as the Motion Picture Academy shortlisted the seven films that will compete for the three nomination slots. The films, selected by the executive branch of the Visual Effects Committee, are ""The Matrix,"" ""The Mummy,"" ""Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace,"" ""Sleepy Hollow,"" ""Stuart Little,"" ""Wild Wild West"" and ""The World Is Not Enough."" The list represents a powerful showing by Industrial Light & Magic. It was the lead house on ""Mummy,"" ""Phantom Menace,"" ""Sleepy Hollow"" and ""Wild Wild West."" ILM once dominated the category, but competition has since blossomed in the digital arena, and the company hasn't had a win since 1994's ""Forrest Gump.""
