Titanic writer/director James Cameron in an interview with the Houston Chronicle, said that he wants the 194-minute movie to be on one disc stating that ìit kinds of defeats the purpose to have two discs.î Cameron added, ìI think theyíre just scratching the surface on what you do with DVD, in terms of additional functions.îCameron would like to see both widescreen and pan-and-scan (photographed in Super 35) versions, and as well, the Theatrevision soundtrack he designed to describe to blind people the visuals in the film, plus extensive supplemental features all on the same disc.Fans of Cameronís LaserDisc packages of his films Aliens and The Abyss will know exactly what Cameron is capable of in this regard. While Paramount, which would be responsible for any domestic DVD release of Titanic, says the movieís release in the format is ìinevitable,î Cameron wants to DVD-18ís greater DVD capacity perfected before greenlighting the project. A DVD-18 will be capable of 18GB of storage featuring two sides, each side dual layered.
