Enthusiasm For HDTV Expressed At Post/LA Expo

A panel of experts on high-definition TV expressed enthusiasm for the fledging format at the recent Post/LA 1999 postproduction trade show held at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel in Santa Monica, California. The points made on the panel were: - HDTVís staged rollout nationwide at present involves mostly classic movies converted to high-definition. - Postproduction, not production, is the driving HDTV force. - Eventually everything will be shot in high-definition. - HDTVís rapid rollout is being hindered by a lack of a uniform engineering standard. Another panel covered the subject of film restoration. The points made on this panel were: - Technology allows cost-effective restoration and film library conversions for high-definition TV projects so the televised image can be as crisp as possible when shown on HDTV. -The ability to repair all sorts of film-based damages has been enhanced during the last few years with advanced photochemical process and digital video restorations. - Studios are undertaking more restoration projects than ever before, but some studios still have no program for restoration.
