A panel of experts on high-definition TV expressed enthusiasm for the fledging format at the recent Post/LA 1999 postproduction trade show held at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel in Santa Monica, California.The points made on the panel were:- HDTVís staged rollout nationwide at present involves mostly classic movies converted to high-definition.- Postproduction, not production, is the driving HDTV force.- Eventually everything will be shot in high-definition.- HDTVís rapid rollout is being hindered by a lack of a uniform engineering standard.Another panel covered the subject of film restoration. The points made on this panel were:- Technology allows cost-effective restoration and film library conversions for high-definition TV projects so the televised image can be as crisp as possible when shown on HDTV.-The ability to repair all sorts of film-based damages has been enhanced during the last few years with advanced photochemical process and digital video restorations.- Studios are undertaking more restoration projects than ever before, but some studios still have no program for restoration.
