Granite will use the technology to offer home viewers data-enhanced broadcast services such as Web-enhanced television. KNTV and KBWBs data broadcasting architectures will be based on Harris Dataplus product, which has been licensed from SkyStream. SkyStream and Harris signed a distribution agreement in 1999 regarding the incorporation of SkyStreams media routers into its family of DTV broadcasting solutions under the Dataplusô brand. The Dataplus product enables television stations transitioning to digital broadcast centers the ability to augment existing video programming lineups with new revenue-generating data services. Granites next generation digital architecture will have the flexibility to enable third-party data services and their own branded services, multiplying the amount of new data programming their viewers can enjoy,"" said Jim Olson, president and CEO of SkyStream Networks. ""By combining Harris longstanding leadership as the premier digital television equipment supplier with SkyStreams extensive background in Internet networking, we are positioned to serve the needs of broadcasters who want the technology expertise to connect their wireless networks with the wired ones that serve most Internet users."" ""Harris is focused on providing next-generation digital architectures for broadcasters and is thrilled to work with SkyStream to build an infrastructure for Granite Broadcasting that allows them to deliver high-quality video and Internet programming,"" said Jay Adrick, Vice President of Systems Integration for Harris Corporations Broadcast Communications Division. ""Granites architecture will enable the company to offer a rich set of applications that combine the robustness of video with the personalization of the Internet."" Product Information Developed by SkyStream and marketed through Harris, Dataplus maximizes bandwidth utilization through the insertion of opportunistic data into null packets within the ATSC transport stream. Dataplus gathers information from a variety of sources including IP, ATM, Synchronous and Asynchronous serial data and converts it into MPEG-2 packets. The system analyzes the incoming audio and video transport layer, identifies and removes null packets and replaces them with data packets for insertion into a single ATSC compliant transport stream. Dataplus is designed to interface seamlessly with Harris FlexiCoder line of high and standard definition MPEG video encoders and multiplexers. Both Granite stations have purchased a Harris V5 frame FlexiCoder. The FlexiCoder has been installed in more than 50% of all digital television stations to date. SkyStreams products include the SkyStream family of media routers as well as a suite of data broadcast applications that offer service providers an integrated solution for sending Internet or corporate data content over broadcast, cable or satellite-based networks. SkyStreams media routers provide broadcasters with an open networking infrastructure to support data broadcasting applications. SkyStreams data broadcast application, the Jetstream Data Broadcast System, offers customers a suite of software tools to schedule, aggregate and deliver popular Web content over a broadcast spectrum. With SkyStream technology, broadcasters can send enhanced data broadcasts, live and scheduled Webcasts and multimedia content to viewers PCs or TVs.
