Linux Founder Slams Studios

Linus Torvalds, founder of controversial operating system Linux, has criticized film studios involved in suing Web sites and programmers to keep the code behind DVDs under wraps. ""DVD companies want to control the market, and not by offering a good technical solution, but by suing their own customers,"" he said during his opening speech at LinuxWorld. The code, known as DeCSS, circumvents the content scrambling system, which is intended to block unauthorized players from playing DVDs. While DVD movies can be played on both Windows and Mac systems, Linux, which can be downloaded off the Internet for free, has not been officially supported by film companies.
