Yamaha Introduces Three New Subwoofers

Yamaha Electronics Corporation has introduced three new powered subwoofers utilizing the company's proprietary Active Servo Technology, YST, which uses negative impedance feedback and other methods to deliver low bass from small speakers and enclosures. The top two models, YST-SW16O and YST-SW9O, use an advanced form of this technology. YST-S160 The heart of Yamaha's new powered subwoofer, YST-SW16O, is its dual 8-inch drivers coupled with the company's Advanced Active Servo Technology. The new model is magnetically shielded, so it can be placed next to a TV or monitor with no picture degradation. The subwoofer is designed to be used in either a vertical or horizontal position. Yamaha engineers first developed Active Servo Technology a decade ago. The servo system is part of the amplifier built into the subwoofer. It senses impedance variations and feeds reciprocal voltage into the circuit to compensate for the effect of static resistance. The company says that this application of negative impedance stiffens the speaker cone and makes it nearly as rigid as the cabinet itself. Thus, the cone moves more air. Much of the low frequency energy created in this way is then delivered into the room via the subwoofer's port, creating an ""air woofer."" Over the years, Yamaha engineers have refined the circuitry. The latest modifications, now embodied in Advanced Active Servo Technology, involve more sensitive sensing and more accurate delivery of reciprocal impedance. The company says that this results in even lower, smoother, and more accurate low frequencies. The YST-SWl60's built-in amplifier delivers 150 watts and the sub's frequency range is 20Hz to 160Hz. Other features of the new subwoofer include auto power on/off with an override switch, continuously variable high-cut filter from 40 to 140 Hz operating at 24 dB/octave, line level and speaker level inputs, volume control, phase normal/reverse switch, and banana plug compatible three-way binding post speaker terminals. The Yamaha YST-SW160 has a black finish, measures 9-1/4(W) x 23-11/16(H) x 18-1/4(D) inches, and has a suggested retail price of $299. YST-SW9O Yamaha's new YST-SW90 is similar in design to the YST-SW16O. It uses a single 8-inch spruce cone driver and employs Yamaha's Advanced Active Servo Technology to achieve a frequency range from 23Hz to 170Hz. The built-in amplifier delivers 100 watts. The magnetically shielded sub can be placed vertically or horizontally. Other features of the new subwoofer include auto power on/off with an override switch, continuously variable high-cut filter from 50Hz to 150Hz operating at 24 dB/octave, line level and speaker level inputs, volume control, phase normal/reverse switch, and banana plug compatible three-way binding post speaker terminals. The Yamaha YST-SW90 has a black finish, measures 9-1/4(W) x 19-1/8(H) x 16-1/8(D) inches, and has a suggested retail price of $229. YST-SW45 Similar to its larger and more expensive siblings, Yamaha's YST-SW45 subwoofer uses an 8-inch spruce cone driver and Advanced Active Servo Technology. The built-in amplifier provides 50 watts and the subwooferís frequency range is 30Hz to 200Hz. The sub is magnetically shielded, so it can be placed next to a TV or monitor with no picture degradation. Other features of the YST-SW45 include auto power on/off, 50Hz to 150 Hz continuously variable high-cut filter, and banana plug compatible speaker terminals. The Yamaha YST-SW45 has a black finish, measures 9-1/4(W) x 14-3/8(H) x 15-1/2(D) inches, and has a suggested retail price of $149.
