Digital Media On Demand Joins SDMI

Already some 160 members strong, the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) scored another teammate today when Digital Media On Demand, Inc. (DMOD) said it has become an SDMI member. DMOD, a provider of digital content encryption, distribution and rights-management technologies, made the announcement at the South By Southwest Music Conference, a music festival and trade show running March 15-19, 2000 in Austin. Both an industry forum and a working specification for encoding copyright-protected music, SDMI has amassed a wide base of support within the worldwide recording, consumer electronics, and information technology industries. SDMI was spearheaded by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), primarily to stem the tide of illegal downloading of copyrighted music on the Internet. The technology forwarded by SDMI is designed to block unauthorized copying, playback or transmission of SDMI-encoded music in compatible devices. ""Joining SDMI puts us at the forefront of the convergence of digital music and the Internet,"" said DMOD President Ty Rauber. ""If DMOD is going to be a part of the ultimate solution of managing, distributing and securing digital content, we need to be affiliated with others who share the same concerns."" Based in Allston, Massachusetts, DMOD says it is the only company encrypting files ""on the fly,"" Its multiple key encryption technology offers content developers the ability to mark and protect up to one key per second for enhanced security, making illegal use virtually impossible and extremely time consuming.
