Projector Tests

The International Communications Industries Association (ICIA) has announced that its Projection Compliance Committee will be launching a pilot program for projector testing. If successful, the ICIA program will be a permanent certification service whereby video projector manufacturers can voluntarily submit units to be tested for accuracy against stated specifications. Projectors whose specs are found to be accurate will be given an ICIA ""seal of compliance."" The ICIA says that the new program grew out of the desire of many in the industry to evolve an objective system of evaluating and comparing video projectors that went beyond the somewhat limited capability of the INFOCOMM Shoot-Out. According to ICIAís Projector Compliance Testing Committee Chairman Mike Levi, the pilot program will employ the services of the National Information Display Laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey to test both fixed resolution (DLP, LCD, ILA) and variable resolution (CRT) projectors for performance, including ANSI lumen, light output uniformity, and contrast ratio. Projectors will be tested only against their own spec sheets to determine if the equipment meets the manufactureís stated specs. The pilot program will be in effect March 15 to May 15, 1999, and results will be assessed in July 1999. Ten to 15 projector manufacturers will be selected to participate in the pilot program, selected according to what the ICIA describes as ""priority points"" with the association, based on participation in INFOCOMM. Participating manufacturers will submit two samples of each projector to be evaluated, along with a $3,500 fee for each portable projector, and a $5,200 fee for each large format projector. Should the ICIA adopt the program on a permanent basis, any manufacture willing to pay the submission fees will be allowed to have their projectors tested and certified should they pass.
