Titanic Ships On DVD In September

Paramount Home Video says that it will release a movie-only version of filmmaker James Cameronís Academy AwardÆ-winning Titanic in September, a year after the VHS version was released. Titanic will represent the biggest motion picture ever to be released on DVD and the only movie ranked among the top 10 highest-grossing movies at the U.S. boxoffice to be released on DVD. The DVD version to be released in the U.S. will be rolled-out simultaneously with the recently announced international DVD version of the movie by 20th Century Fox in September. Titanic was officially released by Twentieth Century Fox as a four-disc Video Compact Disc (VCD). The release occurred last February in Shanghai, China at a party hosted by Fox and featuring a menu from the Titanicís last supper and producer Jon Landau reminiscing about the making of the hit movie. The setís soundtrack is dubbed in Chinese and includes a bonus disc of Celine Dionís music video and a documentary, ""The Making Of Titanic."" A limited edition is packaged in a box made of wood from a shipwreck. (See Todayís News, February 7, 1999.) Previously it was reported that James Cameron wanted to create a special edition of Titanic on DVD as he has done to the delight of LaserDisc fans with his other films. Cameron has been very interested in releasing such on the DVD-18 format, a two-side, dual layer disc with enormous capacity. But the initial release will be limited to a standard edition, like last yearís widescreen LaserDisc release. Paramount, who controls the domestic distribution rights to Titanic, has not provided any specifics as to the actual domestic DVD release. Stay tuned.
